Portland: The Best Place to Meet Green

Destinations offer a large range of green services, and it can be difficult for a planner to know which cities actually walk their talk.

With a LEED-EB (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design - Existing Building) Silver certified convention center, Green Seal certified major hotels and abundant natural spaces, Portland is proud of its ranking as the best place to MeetGreen®.

The Best Places to MeetGreen® Scorecard is a list published by MeetGreen recognizing cities' ability to provide green meeting services. Each city's score has been independently verified by MeetGreen.

Since 1994, MeetGreen has positioned itself as the leading firm for developing and implementing sustainable meeting practices.

The Best Places to MeetGreen® Scorecard ranks cities in the following three areas:

City/Convention and Visitor Bureau (CVB): This category recognizes initiatives that support sustainable communications and marketing practices, reduce and take responsibility for staff travel and provide information on green meeting services. It also gives merit to destinations for infrastructure and policy that support sustainability in the city generally, such as convenient public transit connections between the airport and conference core and the availability of recycling services.

Convention Center/Caterer: This score reflects sustainable practices at the main convention venue. Destinations receive merit for energy efficiency, water conservation, air and water quality, waste reduction and environmental purchasing. Examples include reducing HVAC and lighting demand outside of show hours; purchasing green power, cleaners and papers; and providing recycling and composting. Destinations also receive credit for sustainable catering practices at the convention venue, such as bulk service and use of local organics.

Hotels: This category reflects the percentage of guest rooms in the convention room block that have implemented sustainable practices. Credit is given for energy-efficient lighting, linen reuse, recycling and water-conserving fixtures and other practices.
